Mitti ka Guman (2023) took place on 9th December 2023 at the Biju Patnaik Auditorium, Jyoti Vihar, Sambalpur University, with an extraordinary gathering of over 1000 participants from across Odisha. This celebration, organized by STHAPANA Charitable Trust, aimed to honor Odisha’s rich heritage, traditional arts, and contributions to society. The inauguration was graced by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bidhu Bhusan Mishra, with former Lt. General Dr. Narayan Mohanty, Director of IIM Sambalpur Dr. Mahadeo Jaiswal, and other dignitaries including forest conservator Sri T. Ashok Kumar and prominent academics Dr. Sanat Kumar Saha and Dr. Nruparaj Sahu.
The technical session, Ama Chasi and Vaidyashal, chaired by Prof. Dr. Pradeep Kumar Naik from Sambalpur University, focused on traditional knowledge and sustainable agriculture. Esteemed panelists included Dr. Aparajita Priyadarshini, MD of Chef Farmer Hyderabad Mr. Kalyan Chakraborty, and traditional healing experts like Sri Mana Govinda Ho and Kabiraj Basudev from Maharashtra. Special honors were presented to Vaidya Guru Sri Managobinda Ho for his contributions to traditional healing.
In the valedictory session, the seminar “Paschim Odisha ra Vikash re Paschim Odisha Bashinka Ashinka Bhumika” brought discussions on the development role of western Odisha, led by speakers like folk researcher Sri Ghasi Ram Mishra, writer Deepak Panda, and cultural council member Sri Gopal Das. The session was moderated by Smt. Nibedita Nayak, who honored Prof. Dr. Sanat Kumar Saha for his contributions to environmental and energy sciences.
The program concluded with vibrant folk, tribal, Bhangra, and yoga performances by cultural troupes from Nuapada, Bargarh, Burla, and Sambalpur. The diverse gathering included women entrepreneurs, traditional healers, artisans, athletes, and researchers, creating a platform to celebrate and preserve Odisha’s treasured cultural legacy.
The event also featured on-the-spot enrollment for Pehchan cards, facilitating artisans’ access to further government support. A craft product display by the artisans received enthusiastic appreciation from the guests, and participants left motivated and informed about new avenues for their crafts and livelihoods. Key figures in attendance included Sri Birendra Nath, Officer on Special Duty (Deogarh), Smt. Minkashi Mishra, President of Rumkajhuma, Deogarh, and Smt. Basanti Behera from Zilla Parishad, Zone-II, Deogarh.
